How is cloud software different?

The term “cloud” came into our technology lexicon in 2006 when companies like Google and Amazon started accessing software and files over the web and not from programs loaded on desktop computers. This type of software today is referred to as Software as a Service (SaaS).

Before the cloud, software and data were stored on servers located on your company’s premises, this is commonly referred to as “on-prem” software.

Buyers pay a fee to access SaaS software over an internet connection, instead of paying to own a copy of the product via licensing.
On-Premises is a software delivery model which is installed and operated from a company’s in-house server and computing infrastructure. It builds on an enterprise’s legacy computing resources and requires a licensed or purchased copy of software from an independent software vendor.
